The Kern High School District has started active shooter training for students. Teachers taught the lecture-based training for students in class last week using the U.S. Department of Homeland Security’s Run, Hide, Fight strategy. Abbi Flores, a sophomore at Bakersfield High School, said she thought it was a good idea to provide some guidance to students. “It made me feel safer in the classroom understanding that everyone would know what to do,” she said.
Vanessa Contreras said she would like to see the school improve its security, as she feels it would be particularly vulnerable to an attack. “You can walk on and off the campus,” she said. “What if a guy walks into a classroom and just starts shooting at all of us? It’s scary. The security we have here is not enough to be watching who’s coming on and off the campus all the time. I think the school needs to be fenced up.”
